GOP secretary of state hopefuls seek stronger election laws

Monday, May 31st, 2010

Globe Gazette

Excerpt from article:

Along with election integrity, Schultz wants the Secretary of State’s Office to play a larger role in business development.

“The secretary of state ought to be an advocate for business and business development, not just sit under the Golden Dome, but be out there talking to businesses to find out what they need and what the state can do to help them grow,” Schultz said.

A chief concern is high commercial property taxes and said the state needs to offset that, perhaps with lower business taxes, to encourage business development and job creation.

He’d add a link from the secretary of state’s website to the federal e-verify website as well as training videos so businesses would know how to use the federal e-verify website.

Although he may be promoting himself as the “pro-jobs” candidate, Schultz doesn’t overlook the secretary of state’s responsibility for elections.

“I’m the one candidate really pushing for a photo ID for voting,” he said. “You have to have a photo ID to get on a plane, cash a check or to buy alcoholic beverage. It doesn’t make sense to me that you don’t need one to vote.”

He also wants to reform — nor throw out — Iowa’s Election Day registration law. He proposed that people who register at the polls would vote by provisional ballot so election officials can verify those voters are who they say they are and are voting in the appropriate precinct.

His concern with election integrity is not to suggest voter fraud is widespread, “but any voter fraud is too much,” Schultz said.

Secretary of State Candidate Schultz Visits Atlantic

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

Atlantic News Telegraph

Matt Schultz, a candidate for Iowa’s Secretary of State position, made a stop in Atlantic on Tuesday morning at the Cass County Courthouse.

Schultz said his two biggest goals for the job include advocating for jobs in Iowa and stopping election and voter fraud in the state.

“The issues that are important to me are voter I.D. and jobs for the residents of this state,” Schultz said in a press release. Schultz has been an avid supporter of identification at the polls when voting. “You show your I.D. when you write a check, and when you check into an airport terminal, so why do we not verify who we are when we go to vote?” asked Schultz.
