Schultz Wins Republican Primary

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

Council Bluffs, Iowa – Council Bluffs City Councilman Matt Schultz defeated former legislator George Eichhorn and Chris Sanger in the Republican primary for Iowa Secretary of State. Schultz ran on a strong message as a “Pro Jobs” Secretary of State fighting for fair elections.

“I am honored to be chosen by my party as their nominee for Secretary of State. This has been a long battle to get to this point. A lot of people have sacrificed their time, energy, and money to make this a successful campaign.”

Schultz traveled nearly 30,000 miles since he launched his campaign last October and has put together a multifaceted media campaign ranging from a high quality website, social media, radio and television to get out his message of the importance of accountability in elections and the need for a pro jobs Secretary of State. Schultz has many dedicated volunteers and has created a grassroots campaign spanning from Western Iowa to Eastern Iowa.

“I want to thank George and Chris for a spirited campaign and for helping to focus the debate on elections and the need to fight any and all voter fraud in Iowa. I hope that I can earn their support over the next several weeks and months so that we can defeat Michael Mauro and the Democratic Machine in November.”

Councilman Schultz was endorsed by former Secretary of State Paul Pate, and thirteen current and former legislators including Rep. Rich Anderson, Rep. Cecil Dolecheck, Rep. Greg Forristall, Former Speaker Rep. Christopher Rants, Rep. Renee Schulte, Former Speaker Brent Siegrist, Kent Sorenson, Rep. Doug Struyk, Rep. Nick Wagner, Rep. Ralph Watts, Senator Shawn Hamerlinck, Senator Hubert Houser and Senator Kim Reynolds.

Matt Schultz is a Council Bluffs City Councilman and is married with three children.

For Secretary of State, I urge you to vote for Matt Schultz. He will be a pro-jobs Secretary of State. He will also work to ensure fair elections by implementing a system that will “make it easy to vote, and nearly impossible to cheat” starting off with requiring photo identification, then reforming our same-day voter registration process, and creating a hotline to report voter fraud. I also think that Schultz represents the future of the Republican Party, and we need to cultivate leadership for races further into the future.

Now we find ourselves considering the race for Secretary of State. This is a race that has gotten little if any fanfare from the press, including Iowa Defense Alliance. With all the buzz coming from the Gubernatorial and Congressional races mentioned above in conjunction with life in general, well we just didn’t have time to cover it like I would have liked. I managed to meet Matt Schultz at the 3rd District Convention and found him to be an energetic and intelligent man. Our state would do well to have someone such as Matt Schultz as our Secretary of State. I have also met with George Eichhorn in the past and have found him to be a very competent and intelligent individual. However, I feel that Schultz would be our best candidate to take on Mauro in the general election. And so I enthusiastically support Matt Schultz for the Secretary of State nomination.

I have endorsed Matt Schultz. Here is what I wrote a while back.

“Since 2006, Eichhorn has lost elections to be the Republican nominee to fill Stu Iverson’s seat, lost his State House reelection to McKinley Bailey, lost a bid to be on the Republican State Central Committee, and lost the US Senate primary to Chris Reed. Folks, I know a trend when I see one. I couldn’t pick Schultz out in a crowd, but we need new faces, not perennial losers.”

Actually, Schultz is an impressive guy who has a bright future and is actually talking about the issues that voters will care about in November.

Youth vs. Experience is the best way to sum up the race for Secretary of State. While Republican voters are excited about Brenna Findley’s campaign for Attorney General, a lot of them are equally impressed with and excited about Matt Schultz.

Schultz has done one thing exceptionally well in this race, he has consistently talked about voter fraud and requiring photo ID to vote, as well as being a business friendly Secretary of State. Schultz’ talking points are perfect for the office he is seeking, and he is the only candidate driving that message on the radio. Paul Pate, the last Republican to hold the office, is also his campaign chair.
