On September 9th, the Des Moines Register published the following Statements from Matt Schultz with the following headline.
“It’s hard for me to be critical of the county attorney because I haven’t seen the report,” said Schultz, an Urbandale attorney who has previously served as both Iowa secretary of state and Madison County attorney.
He added, however, that “I would obviously want to get as much information to the public that I could, noting that, “I do believe at some point the public will get the information.”
He said if criminal charges are filed in relation to the shooting then the report should be released, and if there are no charges, at least a summary should be released.
“People want to know and they should know,” Schultz said.
"If elected Dallas County Attorney, I will immediately review the DCI report and determine if charges should be filed and I will then release the report to the public. If there is any reason to wait for further investigation I will let the public know and then release the report when the investigation is complete with a charging decision."

Matt Schultz further posted on X, formerly known as twitter: "When I'm elected Dallas County Attorney the Perry School shooting investigative report will be released. I will review the report and evidence and make a charging decision, or present the evidence to a grand jury. Then the report will be released!"
Since Schultz's statements the current County Attorney has reversed her position and released a summary report and the Commissioner of Public safety conducted a press conference to discuss the findings of the Perry School Shooting report.
